Tegucigalpa, 1990

Ariel Sosa is a honduran photographer and visual artist. His works explores a variety of subjects articulated around a personal vision about the notion of identity, questioning the different elements that compose it such as family structure, social class, ethnicity, geographic location, gender roles and identities, private and public space and whatever else bugs him.

Tegucigalpa, 1990

Ariel Sosa is a Honduran photographer and visual artist as well as an anti racist activist currently based in Tegucigalpa. They studied photography in Guatemala at La Fototeca and took part in several formation programs at EAT (Experimental art school in Tegucigalpa) Their work has been displayed at festivals like PhotoEspaña (2015, 2020), Guatephoto (2018) and Belfast Photo Festival (2022). In 2021 they were selected as finalist for FELIFA/La Luminosa publication prize in Argentina and selected for PhotoEspaña “Descubrimientos” portfolio reviews program and shortlist for the Descubrimientos prize. In 2022 they were given the first “Northern triangle creation grant” awarded by El arte de volar foundation and CCET to finish a graphic novel project and received a silver and an honorable mention at TIFA (Tokyo International Foto Awards).

Their work addresses the tensions between the memory of marginalised populations in the global south and the narrative of hegemonic history. Many of their projects focus on the exploration of transgenerational trauma, linking personal, intimate and familial experience to its social context addressing conflict, migration, sexual dissidence and intersections in the identities of populations from colonised territories.
